class descriptions
One of the great things about Ahh Yoga is that each of our
instructors brings their own experience and expertise to each
class they teach!  So, the class titles may be the same,
but each class has something different to offer you.  Enjoy!

beginning ashtanga
in this class you will learn the majority of the primary series of ashtanga yoga
(this is a type of hatha yoga;  hatha means the physical practice of yoga)
preparing you  to participate in a led class or a mysore-type class (see below).
Along with alignment we will teach you the background & philosophy of the practice.
This type of  yoga moves at a fast pace, get's you heart rate up and you will break a sweat.
The class is designed for people who are brand new to yoga and looking for a challenge, both physically and mentally.

beginning  yoga
this class will teach you the basics of hatha yoga, the physical component of yoga.
You will start out moving slowly to learn proper alignnment, breathing  and to accomodate your physical abilities.
You will also learn basic info regarding the philosophy of yoga .

a step beyond beginning
we realized that we needed to offer a class for people who no longer want to continue taking beginning yoga and yet don't want to join in
a yoga 1& 2 class. This is our version of an  in-between class or a step beyond beginning. We are going to assume you have a basic understanding of yoga postures and that you are interested in participating in a class that is a little slower paced and offers everyone time to learn a little bit more about alignment.

gentle yoga
in this class we would like to welcome beginners and people who are looking for a gentle paced class that focuses on both breathing and
asanas (postures).  can you think of anything better than a little gentle yoga over your lunch?

yoga one and two
this class is for people who have completed at least an 8 week beginning yoga session.  There will be an assumption that you
understand and know three part breath, ujayii pranayama, sun salutations, basic warriors and balance poses.   We will
offer modifications for physical needs and offer a challenging practice for those who are ready.  Come  explore and deepen
your practice and most importantly Enjoy!

led ashtanga
the method of yoga as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India.
This physically challenging form of inter-linking  postures, accompained by deep breathing, creates purifying
internal heat,  realigns & calms the body.    For people who have completed basic ashtanga class or
who have been practicing yoga long enough to feel comfortable practicing the sun salutations
and have a strong sense of adventure.  Please bring your sense of humor and kindly leave your ego in the shoe rack.  We will be leading
you straight through the primary series without much instruction.
if you are a beginner and want to practice this amazing type of yoga, scroll up to beginning ashtanga.  You will need to have completed
the eight week beginning ashtanga class or have a strong hatha practice to jump into this class...just use your best judgement.

ashtanga 1/2 primary
see led ashtanga with a shortened version of the primary series.

ashtanga-vinyasa fusion yoga
A flowing, challenging practice that links breath and movement.  Flow yoga developed out of the asthanga series.
Although we will be practicing some of the ashtanga primary series, we will also vary the asanas (physical postures) from week to week.
It is challenging and fun!  If you have completed a six or eight week basic yoga class we think you would enjoy this class!  We will
assume you understand three part breath, ujayii pranayama, the sun salutations, basic warriors and balancing poses.
If you are looking for a beginning class, please scroll up.

mysore style asthanga yoga
This is a great way to practice ashtanga.  There will be a teacher in the studio supporting people as they move through their practice.
You can arrive and start your practice at 5:30 or anytime after that, as long as your practice is finished by 6:45 (this includes your resting period).
The teacher will support you in the development of your practice, whether that is by letting you know what posture comes next in the series or
adjusting you in a an asana.  Mysore style is designed so that students can all be in different stages of their practice.  So, there might
be someone who comes in and has never been on a yoga mat and someone who is advancing into the second series.  If you are beginning, the
teacher will more than likely teach you some of the series, then have you rest and send you along your way.  All levels welcomed and encouraged
to try this style of practice.  If you would like more info, this link is a good start http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mysore_style.

kundalini yoga
Kundalini Yoga is called the Yoga of Awareness.  It is an ancient science and practice brought to the west in 1969 through yoga master
Yogi Bhajan.  Kundalini Yoga is designed to work effectively and in little time(as little as 3 minutes!). It includes Kriyas(series of yoga exercises),
breathing techniques, mantras, Asanas(postures) and Relaxation. In each class, Mafdet opens the class with a chant to center you
and prepare you for class, then you'll practice a series of yoga exercises followed by a long deep relaxation, then a powerful meditation.
The class is then closed by the Long Time Sunshine song for inspiration and invocation.

You can be an absolute beginner and drop in to any kundalini class.  We really really hope you try this.  It will be different than anything
you have tried in springfield.  Come support our mission to offer a variety of different styles of yoga!

core yoga
think the pilates mat series with some yoga postures added in....think a strong core by the end of summer.  You don't need lots of experience
to be in this class.  You do need a desire to find new stomach muscles.

kid yoga
Provided for children ages 2-8 years old, this class introduces young children to the practice of yoga.  The basic idea is “pre-yoga” training including introduction of the asanas and breath awareness, but with notably less attention on form and technique.  Kids are provided the opportunity to experience yoga in a relaxed, kid friendly, interactive atmosphere, where the primary goal is FUN!  Storytelling, games, and art are included, and laughter and smiles are expected.  It is preferable
that parents stay with their children if they are ages 2-4.  Children of all physical abilities are welcome.

mindfullness yoga for seniors
Midlife is an ideal time to restore health, vitality, and soften the aging process. As Lilias Folan, the celebrated PBS yoga teacher says: “Yoga gets better with age and age gets better with yoga.”  Mindfulness is the practice of moment-to-moment, non-judgmental attention to our bodily sensations, thoughts and emotions.  In this class, we will move at a slow and enjoyable pace to promote safety, strength and flexibility and an inward focus. Familiarity with basic yoga postures and breathing techniques is helpful but not required.    This class meets twice a week.  Students are asked to arrive fifteen minutes before the first class in the 8 week session to complete
intake forms and pay for the session in full.
